Culture: Representation

In Somaliland, representation did not begin in embassies or on international platforms. It began in poetry recited from memory, in patriotic songs, in the wisdom of elders. Where political status remains unresolved, culture carries the story of a people, clear and deeply rooted.

How have we maintained our indigenous identity sandwiched between two world powers who were engaged in ruthless empire building that is the clarion call of colonizers?

At my school's international evening, every other child stood beside a flag. I stood without a country. As an Ahwazi Arab born in the UK, I spent my life between identities, claimed by none. I stopped asking how much of myself to erase, and built new moulds that fit me just fine.
